Would have been a passable romantic comedy, had Raj (Hritihik Roshan) not turned into a complete asshole when he finds out it’s really Puja he’s in love with, not Tina. From that point on one wonders why anyone, particularly someone as intelligent as Puja, would want anything at all to do with Raj. Extra points […]

Watching this movie I had one of those ah-hah moments, that moment when the pieces of a puzzle fall into place. I finally saw what Mira Nair sought to accomplish with Vanity Fair (and only partly attained). A beautiful dream-like world lit by a thousand lights. Colors, glass, and water creating a an entirely […]

There are some serius eighties influences in this movie. The clothes (oh god the clothes are awful), the haircuts, the soft focus closeups, the choreography (including one bit straight out of the Vogue music video). Heck, the plot would make a good Lethal Weapon movie. Fun (mostly), but not really that good.
Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai […]

I think this movie must have been sponsored by the repatriation comittee of the Indian government. Big shot NASA scientist (actually filmed at NASA too!) goes home, learns that despite the problems he sees, he loves India (and the village teacher). He goes back to the US, but his heart is in India, and so […]

Somehow I was thinking this was based on Pride & Prejudice, it’s actually based on Sense & Sensibility. Still, that makes two indian Jane Austen movies this week (and two Aishwarya Rai movies).
I enjoyed the movie, but had a hell of a time understanding what was going on. The subtitles are awful. Wacky grammar, […]

Gurinder Chadha has a good feel for romantic comedy (see Bend it Like Beckham), but not so much for musicals. The english language songs are awful, and the choreography looks silly more than anything else. There a few decent musical bits, Ashanti’s cameo in particular, but I think she would have been better off incorporating […]

I thought Blade and Blade II were decent action movies. Blade is about as perfect a role for Wesley Snipes as there can be, the writing wasn’t god awful, the direction was decent, and the music was suitably loud. They even did a decent job making the world somewhat internally consistent. And then they make […]

It’s odd that we’ve made it to the seventies before having trouble getting ahold of the DVDs we’re supposed to watch, but Netflix seems to have some gaps in its collection of Oscar winners from the era.
I first watched The Godfather trilogy my freshman year in college, as I was avoiding anything resembling studying for […]

What struck me the most about this movie? That it was odd to see Roy Scheider and Gene Hackman looking so young — almost distractingly so.
I’m having trouble thinking of anything to write, it’s been a few weeks since we watched this movie. Nothing much about it has really stuck out in my […]

Good, not great. Never painfully obnoxious. Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughan work well together.

Reading over the AFI 100 greatest movie quotes of all time I realized why I loved Casablanca so much — there are seven quotes from the movie in the list. I’m glad to see that they didn’t stick to dramatic lines, the comedies find their way into the list as well (see #79):
Striker: […]

Compared to Batman Begins, this Batman is pretty slow and stiff (I bet that batsuit weighed a ton).
I love the look of this movie: the batmobile, Gotham City, the Joker.
Michael Keaton does a decent job of playing Bruce Wayne but can’t really pull of Batman. He’s just not enough of a presence and gets swallowed […]

I liked Christian Bale as Batman, but a bit less as Bruce Wayne. I know he’s new to the superhero game, but don’t you think you should be a little more circumspect with your secret identity? Also, his growly Batman voice needs some work.
Michael Caine was great as Alfred.
The batmobile was a lot cooler in […]

The only thing I knew about George Patton before watching this movie was that he was somehow related to tanks and the Battle of the Bulge. Having admitted that I know very little about the man, I felt like Patton strove to show both the positive (his tactical knowledge) and the negative (his abrasiveness) in […]

I remember learning to line dance in middle school, in particular I remember the electric slide and something that required country music (Billy Ray Cyrus to be exact). In high school my spanish class learned an amusing new dance from Spain called the Macarena (we also watched a little film from Mexico called El Mariachi […]

There are movies you appreciate for the way they are made or acted, yet would never want to see again. I’m going to add Midnight Cowboy to my list of such movies. The performances are fantastic. I usually loathe Jon Voight but he’s fantastic as Joe Buck. I find it a little hard to believe […]

We accidentally started this movie at the half-way point (I hate DVDs that are poorly labeled) and didn’t even notice till it ended rather suddenly. Starting over from the start didn’t improve things much. It’s possible that the book Oliver Twist is as poorly plotted as this movie, but I doubt it (I have more […]

We rented After the Sunset to watch with my family while they’re in town for the weekend. My dad went to bed early, but everyone else seem to enjoy the movie. Ignoring some goofs (how can you talk on a radio while diving with a regulator in your mouth?), I thought it was pretty entertaining […]

Right now my local theaters (the ones worth going to at least) are showing a whopping six showings of Revenge of the Sith on each of May 19 and May 20. There are a few ways to view this.
Most shows are already sold out
They’ll be adding more shows as we get closer and those sell […]
